Telomere are caps of DNA at the ends of chromosomes that protect your cells from aging. These caps naturally wear down over time. Each time a cell copies itself, telomeres shorten.

They get shorter and shorter until they can no longer protect the cell. Either the cell then stops growing or it dies in a process called apoptosis− or cellular suicide.
