What is Thermage FLX?

The Thermage system (Solta Medical Inc., Hayward, California) is a monopolar radiofrequency (RF) device that offers non ablative treatment.  Since its approval by the US Food and Drug Administration for rhytids and skin tightening in 2002, the system has continuously evolved. As ageing affects us all, with advances and innovations in medical devices, it can reverse or slow down the ageing affects of the skin and maybe bring back to the skin you have not so long ago.

For effectiveness, 10% of the results are immediately visible, and 30-40% of the remaining results continue to show over the next 3–6 months to 1-2 years, depending on the individual and their maintenance. ***To maintain the results, this treatment needs one to two sessions per year.  This latest device (Thermage FLX) was considered more effective (57.4%) compared to Thermage CPT. How can you prepare yourself before and after Thermage treatment?

General preparation before treatment:

  • Hydrating the skin: Drink plenty of water 2–3 days before your appointment.  Shower and apply a rich, hydrating moisturizer to the treatment area on the day of treatment
  • Secure your collagen: Avoid heavy sun exposure and apply the sunscreen 3-4 weeks before procedure for maximum result. Taking vitamin C can help promote collagen synthesis.
  • Avoid topical irritants: Stop using harsh soaps, medicated washes, scrubs, oils, retinols, scented lotions, and peels 3 days before your treatment 
  • Remove makeup or cosmetic products: On the day of your appointment, remove any makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or other products from the treatment area 
  • Inform your doctor: Let your doctor know if you have a pacemaker, metal implants, pins, staples, or piercings 
  • Take Tylenol: If you are concerned about discomfort, you can take 1 or 2 extra-strength Tylenol 1 hour before your appointment 
  • Allow time for your appointment: Plan to spend 3 hours at your appointment
  • Remove the jewelry: The material inside the jewelry might interfere with the energy delivery though the skin.
  • Take the before treatment picture: It help monitoring the progression and responsiveness from treatment.

Specific site recommendations

Eyes

  • Patients with inflammation of the eyes are not recommended to have Thermage® Eyes done.  
  • Patients who have had LASIK surgery should refrain from Thermage® Eyes for at least 6 months.
  • Patients who wear contact lenses should remove them before treatment.

Face

  • Remove the beard and moustache to enhance the effectiveness of energy delivery through the Thermage tips.

Instruction after treatment

  • You may experience mild redness after treatment. This resolves by itself and does not require ice or medication.
  • Make-up, cream or other cosmetics can be applied immediately if desired.
  • Daily use of good sunscreen products and topical Vitamin C are recommended to achieve and maintain optimal results.
    • Take oral Vitamin C 1000 mg daily for the duration of your treatments and for at least 3 months after procedure help promote collagen synthesis.
