| Procedure and Technique |
| The hip joint is a ‘ball and socket' joint in which the head of the femur (that is the long thigh bone) is the ‘ball' and the acetabulum or the cup of the pelvic bone is the ‘socket'. In THR the head of the femur is replace by a prosthetic ‘stem' and the acetabulum is fitted with a prosthetic ‘cup' to replace the damaged joint. The purpose of doing Hip Replacement is to replace a damaged painful joint with a mobile, stable and painless joint. There are two techniques to do this |
| • |
Traditional technique -in which one long incision is made to access both the cup and the stem. |
| • |
Minimally Invasive Technique (MIS) – in which two small incisions are made, one for the cup and one for the stem. |
| *** Not very case of hip replacement can be approached by MIS. The options will be discussed with you. |
|
