Bangkok Phuket Hospital's CSR - Tsunami Help Project
Kamala Child Development Center Tsunami Foundation
Kamala Child Development Center established in 1980 as Naka Child Development Center. In the beginning it had 20 children and 1 supervisor for the center. Naka Child Development Center used Mrs. Roi-Na Maimaprao‘s ho me as a temporary center, which was controlled by the Department of Community Development, Ministry of Interior.
Since 1 October, 2002 Naka Child Development Center turned over the responsibility to the Kamala Tambon Administration Organization and was renamed Kamala Child Development Center.
Kamala Primary School dedicated some of their space to the Kamala Child Development Center for teaching and taking care of children. At present, there are 10 teachers for 182 children, ranging in ages 3 to 6 years old. In 2004, the center received fund ing from the government to construct a new building. This new building
Is situated near Kamala beach inside the Kamala Primary School area. Construction finished on Friday , 24 December 2004. The new center will open on Monday, 27 December 2004. A few days before the opening, teachers, children and parents prepared their New Year party by making New Year decorations and gift-wrapping.
The unexpected tsunami disaster hit the Andaman coast on Sunday, 26 December 2004. The major force of the tsunami directly hit Kamala coastline. The beach and buildings were severely damaged, a s was the Kamala Child Development Center. The building was swept away by the big wave. Fortunately on Sunday, the center was closed. Not all of the children faced the disast er, but two children died at their home.
After the tsunami disaster, small children in Tambon Kamala have no place to study. The Kamala Child Center will be continuing to operate in a temporary center at the Kamala Tambon Administration Organization. Unfortunately, the space is quite small and there aren't enough teaching materials. The center is looking for funding to build a new place. The center is not sure how long it will take for government funding, but it could be as much as 5 years or more. We think this time frame is too long for the children to be without a proper place to study.
Kamala Child Development Center Foundation has been set up to raise fund s to build a new center and budget for buying teaching materials for the Kamala Child Development Center. Moreover, this foundation will raise fund s to support the education development and learning activities for the children.
The Bangkok Phuket Hospital has already established The Kamala Child Development Center Foundation with a goal to raise 125,000 dollars to rebuild the Center and provide an ongoing budget for teaching materials and operational needs. The Foundation will also endeavor to support education, development, and learning activities for the children in the community over the long term.
