Liposuction Information
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure in which localized deposits of fat are removed to re-contour one or more areas of the body. Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube or cannula is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out.
The suction action is provided by a vacuum pump or a large syringe, depending on the surgeon's preference. Carefully sculpting contour of the body is the key of success because the fat under skin must be removed and the remaining fat tissue has to be kept smooth and in thinner layer. After the surgery is complete, pressure dressing must be worn to the suction site to keep body contour in desired shape.
The time required to perform liposuction may vary considerably, depending on the size of the area, the amount of fat being removed, the type of anesthesia and the technique used. Fluid is lost along with the fat, and it's crucial that this fluid be replaced during the procedure to prevent shock. For this reason, patients need to be carefully monitored and receive intravenous fluids during and immediately after surgery.
Technique Variations
There are several liposuction techniques that can be used to improve the ease of the procedure and to enhance outcome.
Fluid Injection, a technique in which a medicated solution is injected into fatty areas before the fat is removed, is commonly used by plastic surgeons today. The fluid, a mixture of intravenous salt solution, lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine (a drug that contracts blood vessels), helps the fat be removed more easily, reduces blood loss and provides anesthesia during and after surgery. Fluid injection also helps to reduce the amount of bruising after surgery.
Tumescent Liposuction, is typically performed on patients who need only a local anesthetic and usually takes significantly longer than traditional liposuction (sometimes as long as 4 to 5 hours). Large volumes of fluid (as much as three times the amount of fat to be removed) are injected in this technique. Because the injected fluid contains an adequate amount of anesthetic, additional anesthesia may not be necessary.

Pre-Operative
During the consultation, you will be asked to point out the exact areas which you would like to see improved. This will help your surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved. Because of individual physical factors, not everyone will achieve the same results from liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will take into consideration your unique characteristics in determining the most effective treatment.
How much you currently weigh and whether you plan to lose or gain weight in the future will be factors in evaluating you for liposuction. Your plastic surgeon may ask you about the effects of prior weight loss on the appearance of those areas which you have indicated for contouring. He or she will assess the elasticity of your skin and estimate the amount of fat to be removed for optimal results.
You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions you may have such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. Your surgeon will want to know about previous surgeries, medical treatments and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.
Below are important points that you need to consider before undergoing any surgery:
- Stop smoking well in advance of surgery.
- Stop taking Aspirin, herbal or diet supplements and certain anti-inflammatory drugs at least 2 weeks as taking these substances can cause increased bleeding.
- Do not eat nor drink anything at least 6 – 8 hours before surgery.
- Use antibacterial soap and allow the soap lather to cover the skin of the surgical area for 10 minutes on the night before your surgery and in the morning of your surgery.
Post Operative Care
Quiet rest is recommended for the first few hours immediately after surgery.
Elastic Compression Garments
A compressive garment is generally worn by the individual for a period of 1- 4 weeks, depending on where the procedure was done. The compressive garments help to prevent skin damage and bind the skin down to the loose layers of the skin, thus preventing skin sags.
Wound Care & Bathing
Keep incisions clean. Shower once or twice daily. First wash your hands, then wash incisions gently with soap and water; afterwards gently pat incisions dry with a clean towel. Apply new absorbent pads.
When an incision has ceased draining for more than 24 hours, it no longer needs to be covered by pads.
Take Antibiotics
Take Antibiotics as directed until the prescription is finished. Call our doctor if you notice signs of infection such as fever, foul smelling drainage, or focal redness, swelling, or pain in a treated area.
Resumption of Activities
Resume exercise and vigorous physical activity 4 to 7 days after surgery. It is suggested that you begin with 25% of your normal workout and then increase your daily activity as tolerated.
Do NOT immerse in a bath, Jacuzzi, swimming pool, or the ocean for at least 7 days after surgery in order to minimize the risk of infection.
Liposuction Results
First of all, the results will probably not be immediate after the surgery. Some people do see results right away, but between the swelling and compression garments it's unlikely that it will be obvious. The only thing that you should be able to tell is that fat has been definitely removed from the area. However, not all of the fluids that were injected (if you opted for a wet technique) will drain right away and it will take some days to process those out of your body.
The first noticeable results should come a few days after the surgery. By the time you take off the compression garment you'll be able to see your body for the first time. Some of the swelling may still be present though, so it may not be obvious just how much of a difference the liposuction made.
Within a few weeks, the most definite results will become visible as swelling disappears. At this point it may be necessary to invest in new clothes since the old ones may no longer fit.
